Did Covid 19 help Khune topple Akpeyi as Khosi first-choice goalkeeper?

Absa Premiership is resuming on the 11th of August after approximately 5 months of no football action. This season in the Kaizer Chiefs team, we saw Daniel Akpeyi taking the first-choice goalkeeper from a long time serving goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune who had suffered an injury that kept him off the field for months.

Now with the resumption of the league, it would be interesting to see who is going to be between the poles between the Super Eagles goalkeeper and the Spiderkid.

According to the Kaizer Chiefs website, Khune admitted that it was tough for the players to train on their own at home after South Africa’s president Cyril Ramaphosa implemented a countrywide lockdown from 26 March.

“Luckily, we have new technology, like the Zoom mobile app, via which we could have video communication,” Khune explains. “This helped the coaches to guide us on exercises to keep fit. It was a frustrating time, as we missed being on the field. We just had to hang in there.”

Kaizer Chiefs website further stated that “Khune, however, is excited that training could resume on the training pitches at Chiefs Village about three weeks ago and can’t wait for the league to restart. “We are happy that we will soon be able to do what we all love again – playing football.”

Kaizer Chiefs is currently topping the league with 48 points, which is 4 points ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns who still have a game in hand.
